Dear Sirs, welcome to the Valley of Palaces and Gardens
Chairman of Foundation Board
The Jeleniogórska Valley has already been recognized as at the end of the eighteenth century as an exceptional place, the romantic ideal, arcadia. Not only had the picturesque landscapes of Karkonosze Mountains and Rudawy Janowickie but also wonderful palace buildings, parks, religious or regional architecture attracted travelers and artists from all over Europe. Kings and princes, ministers and generals of the Prussian government, the most brilliant European aristocratic families have sought here summer residences and ancestral seats. Palaces and manor houses not only gained new owners but also new costumes and setting. Rebuilt Renaissance and Baroque palaces in neoclassical style and neo-Gothic estates transformed into a vast landscape parks, artists were invited to the residences. So was born the romantic vision of the Silesian Elysium.
The period of the second half of the twentieth century, launched a huge exodus of people, it brought forgetfulness of past traditions and values of the area. Difficult post-war period did not favor cultural continuity. Undervalued and misunderstood heritage was subject to degradation. Today, after decades of neglect in Jelenia Góra Valley a remarkable cultural landscape is being restored. Neglected and devastated monuments regain their former glory. Valley of Palaces and Gardens brand becomes the most important tourist hallmark of Lower Silesia. Romantic palace and park complexes have been entered by the President of Poland on the prestigious list of Monuments of History.
But the return of artistic traditions cannot be separated from unusual architectural heritage. Just as centuries ago, poets, musicians, painters, poets visited the residences of the Prussian aristocrats, Polish, Dutch and Austrian so now the old cradle of cultural life should radiate similar ideas.
